Orient Express

Overview:

In this project, I had the privilege of crafting the comprehensive brand identity for the Orient Express Restaurant. Our mission was to seamlessly blend the opulence of the historic Orient Express train with the contemporary flair of fusion cuisine. This project encompassed every aspect of branding, from the logo to the color palette, typography, and other visual elements, all aimed at evoking a sense of luxury, adventure, and culinary excellence.

Project Challenge:

The primary challenge we faced in this project was to strike the delicate balance between honoring the rich tradition of the Orient Express train and infusing innovative elements that would resonate with modern diners. We needed to ensure that the brand identity could authentically represent the luxury and adventure associated with the train’s history while also conveying the fusion cuisine concept of the restaurant. Achieving this balance required meticulous design thinking and careful consideration of every visual element.

Design Inspiration:​

Our design inspiration drew from the historic Orient Express train’s storied journeys. The train itself served as a symbol of luxury, adventure, and discovery. We wanted to encapsulate the sense of excitement and opulence that passengers experienced on the train while also reflecting the fusion cuisine theme of the restaurant.

The train’s iconic route, with its history-laden path, was a central element of our design concept, symbolizing the journey from tradition to innovation, and from the East to the West. This inspiration guided every aspect of our branding design, from the logo to the color palette, typography, and pattern creation.

Approach to the Project:​

Our approach to the Orient Express Restaurant project was guided by a fusion of design thinking and philosophy, carefully curated to encapsulate the restaurant’s essence. Here are some of the key principles that underpinned our design:

This approach mirrored the restaurant’s fusion cuisine, seamlessly blending Eastern and Western flavors.

Logo Development:

The journey to create the Orient Express Restaurant’s logo was a meticulous process rooted in the heritage of the historic train route. Here’s how it unfolded:

Starting with the Old Route: We began by retracing the steps of the original Orient Express route, laden with history, opulence, and adventure. This iconic route became the foundation of our design concept, connecting the past with the present.

Rotating and Combining the Shape: To infuse a modern twist, we rotated and combined the shape of the old route, symbolizing a departure from tradition and the birth of something fresh. This transformation paralleled the fusion cuisine theme, blending Eastern and Western influences dynamically.

The Birth of the Logo Symbol: From this transformed route shape, the logo symbol emerged, mirroring the grace of a train in motion. It embodied the essence of luxury train travel, elegantly flowing with fluid lines.

Typography in Geometrical Shape: Taking inspiration from this symbolism, we applied the same geometric thinking to the typography. The letters in the restaurant’s name were meticulously crafted to fit into a geometric shape, conveying precision and sophistication.

Color Philosophy and Pattern Creation:

Our color palette and intricate pattern were integral parts of the logo development process, weaving together heritage and modernity:

Soft Ivory (#F4F3E1):

Ivory, a timeless color associated with luxury and refinement, complements the palette. It represents the white tablecloths and fine china used in the dining cars, adding a touch of sophistication.

Deep Burgundy (#620934):

This rich burgundy color pays homage to the luxurious interiors of the Orient Express train cars, symbolizing elegance and sophistication. It reflects the sumptuous upholstery, curtains, and décor of the carriages and represents the deep flavors patrons would encounter at the restaurant.

Golden Yellow (#EFBE58):

Golden yellow signifies culinary excellence and the fusion of flavors, mirroring the delectable dishes and innovative menu. It infuses vibrancy and excitement into the brand.

Energetic Orange (#F05A2A):

Energetic orange captures the sense of adventure associated with train travel, symbolizing the excitement of embarking on a culinary journey at the Orient Express Restaurant. It adds enthusiasm and energy to the brand.


Earthy Brown (#836036):

Inspired by the wooden paneling and furnishings of the Orient Express train cars, this earthy brown signifies warmth and comfort. It reflects the cozy and inviting ambiance of the restaurant.

Pattern Creation:

Our intricate pattern seamlessly blends the historic Orient Express train route with oriental patterns. This fusion symbolizes the meeting of cultures and flavors, echoing the restaurant’s fusion cuisine theme.

Challenges & Solutions:

Crafting a brand identity for the Orient Express Restaurant posed several challenges, met with innovative solutions. We aimed to balance tradition and modernity, maintaining the train’s heritage while embracing fusion cuisine. The deep burgundy and golden yellow colors were chosen for culinary excellence. We designed a logo by transforming the Orient Express route shape. The intricate pattern blended cultural elements. Our palette of earthy brown, soft ivory, and energetic orange attracted a diverse clientele. The result is an authentic and inviting brand identity that resonates with a broad audience.

Results & Impact:

The Orient Express Restaurant’s branding successfully captured the essence of luxury train travel while seamlessly integrating it with the contemporary fusion cuisine. The color palette, pattern, and logo design resonated with patrons, creating a unique and memorable dining experience. The restaurant attracted a diverse clientele seeking a culinary journey that blended history, luxury, and innovation.
